In the Garden of Beast by Erik Larson. It's a long book and I'm alternating between really liking it and feeling like it's just slow and dragging...

In the Garden of Beast by Erik Larson. It's a long book and I'm alternating between really liking it and feeling like it's just slow and dragging... I felt the same way about that book - it was interesting subject matter but kind of boring and I'm not sure why all the hype. I just started Stone Angel by Margaret Laurence - I'm not sure how I feel about it yet. I'm also reading Barbarian Lost by Sacha Trudeau - sort of a travelogue of modern China.

I love Margaret Laurence! My grade 12 English teacher was totally into Canadian Lit, and we read a bunch of her. She was local-ish to us, too, so that was added interest.
I’m trying to finish the novel Lily and the Octopus by Stephen Crowley. He’s a friend of my nephew’s. I don’t like the main character, so I’m finding it hard to care how it turns out.
I’m also in the middle of Waiting for First Light by Romeo Dallaire, about his battle with PTSD after Rwanda. Heartbreaking story.

Just finished listening to The Barkskins by Annie Proulx. It was 27 hours long! But amazing.

Random free chick trash from Amazon. lol After working all day, I have zero brain power for anything else. I would like to try reading the Discovery of Witches book again, though.

In the Garden of Beast by Erik Larson. That's on my TBR pile. I need to start The Big Burn: Teddy Roosevelt and the Fire That Saved America by Timothy Egan for book club in October. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I've never read any Laurence before and, while it's well written, the narrator is just a miserable human being. I dislike spending time with her. Good luck with Waiting for First Light. That book broke me - I thought I would be prepared for it after having read Shake Hands with the Devil but I wasn't. It was like reopening a wound that I thought was closed. Both of those books literally changed me and how I view the world around me.

I'm reading "Sushi For Beginners" by Marian Keyes. It's pretty good. It's not a cookbook - it's fiction. The writer is Irish.

Trying badly to read the book my friend has written. It totally doesn't speak to me.

Rereading Game of Thrones. Not sure if I'll do the whole series again.

Finished The Roanoke Girls, that was some serious VC Andrews style trash right there! (Which people love or hate!)
I have been reading lots of fluff, as my mind just can't read the more serious stuff sitting in my Kindle. I know my life is in a rut when I read Sophie Kinsella and that sort of lot.
I am now a few pages in to Eleanor Oliphant. I have a feeling it's going to get a bit dark.

Finished The Penderwicks - sweet book! Clara is reading it now and enjoying it.
Also finished Educating Your Gifted Child (Vicki Caruana) - I was drooling over the gifted ed textbooks in a catalog recently, and I decided to check out what I can from my library and ILL request others.
And I just finished Beauty (Robin McKinley).
Now I think I will try to finish Retribution before I start on the stack of five books Clara wants me to preread for her. I'm expecting to skim some of them...

Yes, Hagar is horrible, isn’t she? Which is entirely the point of course. It is harder to read now than I remember, likely because of more real life experience.

I'm reading A Man Called Ove so I can watch the movie with a friend. Luckily she's patient because I'm a slow reader.
