Yes, really. LOL
So, I may be looking at one. Not quite sure yet. My doctor said my uterus is very enlarged. Since I'm getting migraines with auras, she absolutely no more birth control pills. A mirena may not work for me depending on how large my fibroids have gotten. So, I get an ultrasound and biopsy on the 19th.

No experience with hysterectomy but How old are you? Do you still really need birth control?

No experience with hysterectomy but How old are you? Do you still really need birth control? The birth control is simply for heavy bleeding. Otherwise, I have a constant period.

I'm 49 and DH had a vasectomy 14 years ago. If I got pregnant, it would be miraculous!

How about an ablation?
I think a total hysterectomy would be a last resort. That's why I asked about birth control. I would give that up before my uterus. But at the end of the day, whatever will bring you relief!

But at the end of the day, whatever will bring you relief! Unfortunately, ablations are not very successful for fibroids. We'll see, but from what I've been told, it sounds like a hysterectomy is likely.

I had an ablation for fibroids. That was in 2004 so maybe they don’t do that any more. No period since 2004.

Had an ablation 3 or 4 years ago, still have regular periods (no fair!!), though lighter than they were. The doc doesn’t feel a hysterectomy is warranted for me at this point, but I wouldn’t be opposed to the idea.

I have literally a constant period with very heavy clotting.
My gyn said no more hormones with estrogen.
I don't know. She said my uterus was extremely large which seems to indicate my fibroids have grown.
Blah. Being a woman is not for the faint of heart! LOL

I had a hysterectomy almost 10 years ago. Best decision I ever made! Mine was done vaginally (removed cervix, too), so I didn’t have an abdominal incision to deal with. I still have my ovaries, and according to my latest bloodwork, I still haven’t hit menopause.

Best decision I ever made. I had an ablation, but it only made my bleeding less severe. It did nothing for the pain and I still had a period every month. They found fibroids so we decided to take it out in April, cervix too, but left my ovaries. Even with having to convert to a laparotomy because of extensive scar tissue from my four c-sections, it’s still the best choice ever. To be blunt, sex us even better, I don’t bleed every however many days my uterus feels like giving me each cycle, and I’m not doubled over in excruciating pain anymore. They also found adenomyosis when they took it so that explains a lot of what was going on.
I say do it.

I had mine at 41. I was bleeding heavily and anemic. It made so much better. My only advice...tell them to take your tubes too!

I don't think I ever got anemic. I always have gone back on the BCPs when the bleeding got uncontrollable.
We'll see, I guess. The doctor was talking me into the Mirena before the exam, but when she felt how large my uterus was, she said it's maybe not an option. She said people with large fibroids tend to expel them.

So, I had my ultrasound and biopsy today. My one fibroid is larger, about 6cm. It's at the top of my uterus, so she feels that a Mirena would just get expelled eventually. She gave me the option of trying Provera for awhile to see if that helped, but I tried that 4 years ago and I still bled non stop. She said I could try it longer to see if it eventually evened out. I opted for the hysterectomy. I'm just so tired of dealing with this. She didn't indicate it was the right or wrong answer. Doctors never will tell you that! So, I'm scheduled for Dec. 19th. She said she could do it most likely through laparoscopy. She also said she wouldn't know until she opened me up about any endometriosis. I had that in my early 20's, so I wouldn't be surprised if there was more in there. I'm nervous and wondering if I made the right decision, but I'm so over all this crap.

Good luck, Mare. If you can get it done laparascopically, I think you'll feel that you made the right choice. That's what I've heard from my friends who had it done.

Well, if Dr. WBTD is correct, it does sound like the right decision. I can't imagine going through what you are every month!

I'm bored and unable to sleep. Hopefully will get out of the hospital today.
The doc says my uterus was very enlarged and had grape-like cysts all over the back side of it which they couldn't see on the ultrasound. Yuck.
She said it didn't look cancerous, but I'll find out next week from pathology.
But, she said it definitely should have come out and she had never seen anything like that before. So, it was the right call. I just wish it could have been done laparoscopically. She tried, but it was just too big. Kept both ovaries, so that's good. She took the tubes, uterus and cervix.
