My wife is letting me (being jokey) have a small patch in our back garden so I can try to grow vegetables. What are no fail easy for beginners to plant this time of the year? Thanks.

I usually have good luck with green beans, tomatoes and cucumbers. That's all I'm growing this year mostly because they are pretty low maintenance and I'm guaranteed to get some veggies.

Just FYI: if you order seedling plants from Suttons Seeds, they will send them to you at the time they should be planted out. I am also trying some gardening for the first tine and I have ordered a few things from them.

Beets are easy. Spinach, too. Kale. Peas. Zucchini.

What zone are you in?
I'm in 5-6 and we have a lot of luck with tomatoes and leeks, and herbs as well (I already have too much cilantro).

Most of the UK us in 8-9 on the USDA scale, but it’s better to use the zones from the Royal Horticultural Society, which are completely different. The USDA zones aren’t as accurate here. This is one of the reasons I order from the place that mails the seedlings to me when they need to be planted. I also look at what people have planted in my neighborhood when choosing plants.

DH was going to build me a raised garden bed but didn't get around to it. So instead I commandeered the backyard flowerbed (which we couldn't agree on what to put in there flower-wise) and told him "we're planting tomatoes!" I'm also sneaking some arugula in there, plus I have a little herb bed tucked away at the side of the house. Hopefully it goes swimmingly well and next year I may get me raised beds.
