We just bought a dining set (table and chairs) for our basement from Marketplace. It's lovely, but it smells very strongly of cooking spices. I plan to reupholster the chairs, but even the wood smells. The chairs are upstairs and the table in the basement and the table definitely smells, strongly enough that you can smell it when you come down the stairs even though it is about 20 yards away. It's not unpleasant, but it's an odd smell for the basement and it's strong enough that it is very, very noticeable. I've carefully wiped it down with cleaner, and it definitely still smells. I'm hoping for a sunny day so I can set it outside, but a sun bath might not be enough. Any other suggestions? We are having a game night next weekend and it would take place around the table, but I'm not sure we can do that as-is.

I would try lemon oil or orange oil cleaner. I actually use Orange Clean on my gas stove to clean the top because the mineral oil in it cuts right through everything. I think it would work the same on furniture. If you do that and change the fabric, you should be golden! But until you do the re-upholstering, Febreeze is your friend!

If that doesn't work on its own, try a 1:1 of white vinegar and water in a spray bottle to clean it off, wiping as you go. Let it dry well, then give the citrus oil cleaner another go.

I already tried the vinegar with no success. But once my orange cleaner arrives (complicating factor: I am car-less while we enter week 8 of trying to get our car registered in Nevada. sigh), I will try that and another vinegar wipe. Thanks. I can't believe how much smell there is and how stubborn it is!

If I could get the smell of cigarettes out of the stuff we brought home from my moms place after she passed away, cooking smells should be simple! Good luck!
