You have to click on the New! icon to get to the first Unread post in a thread. Otherwise it brings you to the first post in the thread. After you click on the New Posts option at the top of the page and get the list of new posts Click on the New Posts image next to the Subject line and it will take you to the first post you haven't read yet.

There is a Feature at the Top Right (under your User Name) that says New! Participated.
Instead of subscribing to threads you can just click on that to see which threads you have posted in.

When you are viewing a board, there are a list of threads. In the cell that contains the thread title, you will often see a NEW! icon (to the left of the thread title)
If you click anywhere in the thread title cell that is not the NEW icon , it will take you to the first page of the thread.
If you click one of the page numbers it will take you to that page in the thread.
If you click the NEW icon it will take you to the oldest unread post. If you've read everything in the thread, the new icon will not appear.
Say you have a thread that you've never read before and it has 3 pages.
You click the new icon once. It takes you to the first page of the thread. You do not read the 2nd or 3rd page. You go back to view the board that has the thread and you click the new icon again. Now you get sent to the 2nd page. You do not read the 3rd page. You go back to view the board that has the thread and you click the new icon again. Now you get sent to the 3rd page. You go back to view the board that has the thread and the new icon is gone for that thread because you viewed everything on that thread. Now another member posts in the thread. There is still 3 pages in the thread. Now when you view the board that has the thread, the new icon is back. You click the new icon and it will take you to page 3 again but it ALSO auto-scrolls the window to the new post because that is where you last left off.
