Cigna won't cover OxyContin prescriptions for 2018 as health insurer targets opioid abuse
Do you view this as a good thing?

For the record, if you absolutely need OxyContin and your doctor can justify this to Cigna, they will cover it.
I think we have to start somewhere.

Is Oxycontin something normally prescribed long term? I've had prescriptions for Percocet after surgery but was never prescribed more than about 30 with no refills after some type of surgery.
I don't see any reason to remove it as a formulary drug but would agree with more limitations on it. No more than X pills every X days and no more than X refills a year or something. And/or the doctor needs to call the insurance to get it approved, which is what they have to do today to get insurance to approve some of the more expensive drugs.
But at the end of the day, oxycontin seems to be pretty cheap to just pay for even without insurance, so I don't know that this will do a lot of good. I think Cigna just wants some good PR.

It doesn't surprise me. My DH can't even get his Zegerid through insurance anymore and it is not even an addictive drug. They are refusing to cover it or the generic anymore and trying to make him switch to one of the others. He has ulcers. The zegerid is the only one that actually works for him. It seems that the insurance companies can pretty much do what they want. SaveSave

I don't know. I think people who need it may end up finding other, less savory ways to address pain management. I found it really difficult last Spring to get my doctor to prescribe me hydrocodone even when I was in unbearable pain. I hate the idea of someone who really needs it being denied or making doctors jump through more hoops so that they are less willing to even prescribe it.

We're so damned binary. Either we're handing out like M&Ms or we totally shut it down. Talk about needing some common sense, We need to trust the doctors.
