Trying to find adult volunteers for any school aged activity is really rough. Honestly, by the time DD2 was doing her activities, we were both burned out from doing soccer, dance, theater and any other parent volunteering and organizing.
I can't imagine the time and effort involved in running a scout troop.

Our close friends are now boy scout leaders. If I have to hear about popcorn one more time!!!
We honestly don't get together as often as we used to, due to the scout commitment.

I don't have a problem with their being separate groups. I do have a problem with girls or boys not being able to do certain things because they are boys or girls. In Girl Scouts, we did cooking, sewing and had sleep aways, which were big slumber parties in gyms. I am glad I learned all of those things but man it would have been cool to do the canoeing and archery like my brothers did in Boy Scouts.

I know - it is hard to find leaders for Girl Guides as well, but in a family with a son and a daughter, you're more likely to get the mom volunteering if both her kids can be members. Or in a family where the local girls group doesn't have vibrant, outdoor loving leaders. That seems to be what most kids and parents want for their children. And why wouldn't they - most of the other stuff, the crafts, the shopping trips, the projects, are all things that they may already do in school and at home.
I was SO lucky in Guiding - one of my close friends is a huge outdoor enthusiast. She knows astronomy, and will camp happily in any weather. We had a lot of good years together, and the girls loved it.
