Obviously he shouldn't have done it without permission, but how much of that stuff do they throw away? 3 to 5 slices a day? Oh the horror!

Most of the grocery chains in the area I live (not a Giant Eagle area) provide free samples of all sorts of things as one shops. Deli meat, cheeses, cut fruits, and baked goods are routinely out for gnoshing as I shop. On weekends, beer and wine reps (sold in grocery stores in this state) are frequently available from sales reps pushing their wares. This woman worked there for 9 years. Something makes me think there is more to the story than a few slices of ham here and there. This research covers western Pennsylvania Giant Eagle stores, but as a regional chain based out of Pittsburgh (and a privately owned company), to presume the data crosses the state lines wouln't be much of a stretch: Bolding is mine. This woman was hired after the point in time when 72% of those hired earned poverty wages. The starting wage of a deli clerk at Giant Eagle is $8.45, and that figure (adjusted for inflation) has remained relatively steady since around 1999. (same link) Assuming this woman worked full time, 50 weeks a year for 9 years, her cost to the company was $2/day at 9k. That's a 25c/hr "benefit". EGADS! If a few slices of deli meat per day keeps a poverty level store employee fed--write her up internally long before nine years have passed. At the nine year point, such a firing is ridiculous and signals to me that there was more to it than meets the eye. My thoughts? She may have been trying to unionize a non-union store, took the brunt of the firing on this one, and there may be ramifications resonating throughout Ohio Giant Eagles because of this.

Obviously he shouldn't have done it without permission, but how much of that stuff do they throw away? 3 to 5 slices a day? Oh the horror! Agreed. The way to handle this would have been to talk to the woman 8 years ago and sort this out with a "meat scraps bin" employees could eat free, a tally sheet for the to keep track of slices they were eating so they could pay for it, or some other such thing. Waiting 8 years and then charging her with a felony sounds a little bit like she asked for a raise and they didn't want to have her one so they are getting rid of her by charging her for something they have known about for years and never bothered to address.

And Giant Eagle is the “fancy” grocery around here.

There has to be more to the story than 3-5 slices of ham a day. If that's the only thing, then Giant Eagle is being petty.
On another note, I miss Giant Eagle.

What do you miss about the Big Bird? It's larger and cleaner than either Safeway or Lucky here (with a couple of exceptions). (Or Krogers there...) I like Meijer, too.
