I just finished A Discovery of Witches, by Deborah Harkness. It reminded me a bit of Outlander, but with vampires and witches and libraries. Not my usual genre but I’ll probably download the rest of the series so I have something light on hand when travelling. Apparently there is a TV show, which I will never watch. Not sure what is next. I have a huge pile of YA to read for work.

I read the first book in 2012 but then never picked up the 2nd one. So in 2015 I re-read the first one and plowed through the next two. I'm not sure if I want to read Discovery for a third time just to read the newest book

Just finished The Silent Patient. I figured out the twist rather quickly and hated all the characters

Finished Very Nice by Marcy Dermansky yesterday. I guess I just don't understand the point of it. It got good reviews but not really my cup of tea. It kept building up to something that it didn't achieve.

I mean, the story was nice, but I kept wondering what is the point? Not terrible if you check it out at the library, but I would definitely not recommend spending money on it!

Book Club Bitch just posted our Feb and March books with no discussion. I guess she's just issuing reading assignments now? Correspondents: A NovelAnd My Name is Venus Black by Heather Lloyd The former looks okay, but the latter doesn't interest me at all. Anyone read either? Hoping this will actually convince everyone the the book club divorce needs to happen. It's not even about the books; it's about being told what we will read without discussion or input.

I would just say something like "Oh did I miss the discussion because I don't remember seeing a vote?"

I would just say something like "Oh did I miss the discussion because I don't remember seeing a vote?" I did say, "Oh, I didn't realize we'd selected books past Jan; I'll have to update my Amazon reading list" (because I am a coward and that's the watered-down, cowardly version of what you said), and she just responded that she has checked and the library has both in hard copy. So I think she totally knows what she did, because she responded without actually addressing what I said. She's annoyed because other people suggested the Nov. and Jan. books, and she didn't like them. (I actually suggested both, and other people chimed in that they thought those books sounded interesting.) Everyone's last hope was that if we got more involved, she would actually welcome not carrying the load. I think this went exactly the other way and this was her way of making it clear that she sees this as *HER* book club. Which is fine, but that's not the right book club for me.

I’d speak up about it. Book clubs are supposed to be enjoyable for all members, not just the most vocal one.

Yeah time to bail on book club. And I don't think you even have to be nice about it at this point.

I don't even want a conversation. In one sense, it's a super casual book club. It's not like some where everyone is pretty much expected to come. You come when you want to, basically. So I'm ready to just stop going. I think the group has 19 members on FB and I don't think more than 6 of those have ever attended since I joined earlier this year. So ghosting isn't really a problem.
And I really think this woman thinks it is her book club. She and one other woman (a friend of mine) kind os started it together. But she does everything, maybe at first because no one else wanted to (I wasn't around so I can't really say) but now because she likes it.
Everything was on the fence but kind of wanting to see if maybe we could get her to come around, but this this latest, I think they are mostly ready to bail. I like reading books I otherwise might not. That's the great thing about book club. And even if I don't end up liking them, it's fine. But everyone should get a say.

I'm currently reading the Andromeda Strain by Micheal Crichton. It came out about a month before I was born so for my birthday this year dh bought me a 1st edition UK cover. It's odd that I've never read it before because I've read a few of his things. So far I'm enjoying it. It's quite technical in places - you can tell he was a doctor - so it's sometimes hard to follow at bedtime. But it's cool - a lot of older sci-fi stuff seems quaint now because they put it in the "future" and now living in the future we can tell that shit never came to pass. But this book was written as a "current event". It came out a month after the moon landing (but was obviously written before that) so it's cool to see 1960's tech being used in a sci-fi book - but it's not outdated.

For my current class, I just read Difficult Conversations, and villanelle, I recommend it for you so you can have the real conversation about the control freak if your book club.

I'm awful at that in all situations, not just book club, so it probably would be useful. Not the first time I've seen this book recommended. Maybe I need to give it a read. Thanks!

I just finished Less by Andrew Sean Greer on audiobook. I really enjoyed it. I wasn't expecting a comedy and found it sweetly poignant.
Now listening to Washington Black by Esi Edugyan. Still reading Prisoner of Heaven by Carlos Ruiz Zafon.
