Hospice is wonderful. I would ask to speak to hospice even if the nursing home is now saying maybe he doesn't need it. Not eating and losing weight are major signs of decline. Getting rid of the metamucil isn't going to change that. I would speak to the social worker at the nursing home and insist on a hospice consult. Hospice will come in and evaluate him and see if he qualifies. If he does the extra help is always nice to have. Once he is on hospice, he can stay on and every 6 months they reevaluate whether he needs to continue on or not. I had a patient on hospice for a few years before they finally had to take her off of hospice.
