Zuckerberg is such an @ss and is getting rich off hatred and lies. It makes me ill and I can't stand the thought of supporting it. On the other hand, I have a dozen years of family memories stored primarily on FB and have reconnected with people from all the places I have lived during my life. I don't want to lose that. I'm torn.
Could you give up facebook?

I can but I haven't yet. I want to make sure all the photos I posted on there are saved on my drive before I quit.

I already did, last fall. I don’t miss it at all. I should have done it years ago.

I don't think I could. It's basically my life's journal and my kids' baby book.

I don't know. It's been a way to keep connected with family that I normally wouldn't be able to.

It would be hard. It makes it a lot easier to keep in touch, especially living in a different country from where I grew up. I also use it for work pretty regularly because I am in several professional groups on FB. However, I do think it would be very freeing to get rid of it and I hate the ethos of Zuckerberg and the company in general. Maybe when I retire. I would need to download everything first, like maurinsky said, but it would be easier at that point because I wouldn’t need to use it for work.

I don't know. It's been a way to keep connected with family that I normally wouldn't be able to. This. If I don't receive a "Good morning" and a "Good night" message from my mom every day (each at absurd old people hours), I start to wonder what's going on in her world that she hasn't done so.

I think it’s an effective tool to let you know which of your relatives are morons.

I live in a town that doesn't have a newspaper. I follow the city agencies and local businesses to keep informed on what is going on.

I moved to FB when so many of my friends stopped emailing. I felt I didn't have a choice.

I have taken breaks. But it seems to have become my major source of online socializing. So I always go back after a bit.
My work uses it a lot, too, for things like the Facebook Live segment I do biweekly. I also have a fake account that I use to follow dog accounts so they don’t clog up my newsfeed.
It’s a tough one for me.

Nope. It’s my connection to friends and family everywhere.

I hide/unfollow/unfriend people who irritate me with political posts. It saves most angst. Sometimes someone surprises me and I get annoyed. They go into virtual timeout on my feed.

I will when something better comes along, and then it will be the new MySpace.

If we all give up FB, then it really does become Fox News or One America News. Another convenient place for the stubbornly dogmatic to get their dogmatic news with the spin they prefer and to connect others and move others of like mind or persuadable ones.
Fuck that. I’m gonna connect with alllllll the comfortable racists and get inside their heads, if I can. Keep wedging that little independent doubt of is this really “what would Jesus do-worthy? Because five years ago you were wearing that little WWJD bracelet and saying it constantly at the end of your posts. Why are you not saying it now? Is it because you lost the bracelet? Are you really over the concept? Or did you move on from Jesus as your personal savior and have now moved on to Donald Trump? Should there be WWTD bracelets?
They probably already exist. 🤣
I will infiltrate everywhere I can even though I have other things I probably should be doing. The Russians and Chinese counterparts sure aren’t giving up FB. For Zuck it may well just come down to the cash, but I think he’s trying to hold on to his entire audience, like Dolly Parton. I’m fairly comfortable that in her secret heart, she’s not a fan. But what does issuing decrees about what a shitty leader Trump is do other than alienate half her audience? And then that group bonds closer over losing another part of pre-Trump America. Like a cult cuts you off but by bit from your previous life.
There is a momentary satisfaction in denouncement, yes. But then she loses all influence with them entirely. So she sings her song and starts talking about values that she holds dear and her fans hold dear but dear leader clearly does not hold dear. Just little wedge things that might get through with some of her lifelong fans eventually. It sounds like capitulation but it’s another form of resistance and we need all kinds. We need to be working every angle from now until November.

LB, that's an interesting perspective! I read a whole thread on Twitter last night about ways to sabotage a fascist regime, and that is like a form of information sabotage to disrupt the massive amounts of dis and misinfo being spread via social media.

Tell me about this new MySpace thing. I mean it will be the next MySpace, similarily antiquated and irrelevant.
