Same. I teared up when I marked my vote for Biden, knowing it will be a "wasted" vote, since there is zero chance of any Oklahoma EC vote going to him. But it was nice to see it on paper.

Not a waste. Won’t change your state but your vote counts.

I really need to get educated on the EC. I can’t wrap my head around whichever candidate gets the most votes wouldn’t also get the EC vote. 🤷🏼♀️

Each state in this scenario gets 1 electoral vote. State A: Chocolate--99 votes, Smarties--1 vote Electoral vote goes to chocolate State B: Chocolate 49 votes, Smarties--51 votes Electoral vote goes to smarties State C: Chocolate 49 votes, Smarties--51 votes Electoral vote goes to smarties Popular Vote: Chocolate 197 votes, Smarties 103 votes Electoral Votes: Chocolate 1, Smarties 2 Smarties win the electoral college, chocolate is the clear popular vote winner ETA American smarties--the hard, chalky little discs

I really need to get educated on the EC. I can’t wrap my head around whichever candidate gets the most votes wouldn’t also get the EC vote. 🤷🏼♀️ They do, but only for that state. Although there are a few states that don't have a winner-takes-all distribution of their allotted EC votes. While CA (as an example, but most states work this way) gives all 55 of their ec votes to the winner of the popular vote in that state, Nebraska and Maine aware one EC vote to the winner of each of ther congressional district, and then the remaining two to the popular vote winner of their state. There's a compact, on which some states have signed, that says they will award all of their EC votes to the National popular vote winner, which in effect nearly eliminates the function of the EC. However, it includes a caveat that it will only go onto effect if enough states sign on so that it will be guaranteed that the EC winner is the popular vote winner as well. (So the total EC vote of participating states would have to be 270+) If only a few states do it, it could tip the scales in weird ways that some would consider unfair. Until then, the winner of the state gets all of that states votes, except in Nebraska and Maine.

I worked the polls (it sounds dirty when you say it, but not so bad when you write it) from 5:15 am until 10pm last night.
In CT general elections, they divide the voting by street name. At my polling station, we had 3 tables: A-H, I-O and P-Z - so folks like up for the table that has the pollbook for those streetnames. For the first 2 hours of voting, we had a steady line at each table. For the remainder of the day until almost 8pm, the P-Z table had a line out the door. Each book of voters by street had approximately the same number of registered voters in it, so it seems statistically unlikely that only the P-Z voters would vote in person, but that's how it worked out.
I was an Asst Registrar for this election, mostly helped people get reinstated if they were on the Inactive voter list, helped them figure out which district they should vote in because it wasn't the one they were in, or sent them to the only Election Day Registration polling station in town.
I have so many ideas for ways to improve the process. It's a long slog for people waiting in line. The poor P-Z line would have hour long waits and A-H/I-O would breeze right through.
We had 2 guys with MAGA hats that complied when asked to remove their hats without too much grumbling, and one woman decked out in Biden Harris gear who complied when we told her she had to cover it up.
In all the hours we were there, only 2 people did not wear masks.
The Governor stopped by to thank the volunteers for their work.

What amazes me is that the US does not have a central body responsible for managing elections and counting votes - that it’s up to states and even counties to do that.

For the past couple of weeks, I have found it better to tell people I am from Israel than from the USA. Which says a lot when the City Council has a Palestinian flag flying on its roof to show support for them.

Everything I’m reading says Biden will scrape out a win. I’m on the edge of my seat.

I am fairly certain Biden will win. Not sure my opinion means much, but I was fairly certain Brexit would happen and Trump would win last time, so hopefully I’m 3 for 3!

This has always befuddled me, too. It seems that almost every US election has fights over who, where, when and how. It's a basic function of government, why can't they do it correctly?
Canada is 100 years younger than the US and we go in, vote, they get counted (and maybe recounted), and we have winners. Done.

In our Dems Abroad zoom last night, we got to talking about Florida. I think if Dems want Florida, ever, they need to be there a LOT. And by a lot, I mean every chance they get, especially if Biden wins. He needs to get down there, and court Floridians, for the next 4 years, ALL THE TIME. Trump in 2016 and again in 2020, was there a pile. I mean, duh, Trump/Florida but - it gave him all the opportunity to hammer home the whole socialist angle, in a state with a lot of people who have come from socialist countries and who he easily scared off from Biden. Biden didn't show up much (duh, pandemic, but still) and Obama didn't show up to stump for him until the last minute. If the Dems want Florida, they need to be there, showing they're not the oogedy boogedy socialists the Repubs paint them to be. Don't wait until the election year, because it's a start from behind the 8-ball situation by that point. Florida has shown some pockets of progressiveness, Dems need to capitalize on that, whether Biden wins, or he doesn't - ignoring Florida's 29 electoral votes until the last dash around the rail is not wise.

Also, our nonpartisan electoral body is responsible for defining and redefining electoral districts, so there’s no gerrymandering. I don’t believe the government has any input whatsoever into Elections Canada.
