I just started Natives: Race & Class in the Ruins of Empire, by Akala. I love Akala. He is an activist/poet/rapper who talks a lot about racism in the UK, which is often glossed over (“oh that’s an American problem, we don’t have that here...”).

I'm two chapters into, and probably out of, Her Worst Mistake by Kelly Utt. Probably the worst book I started in a long time. Good thing it's a freebee.

My public library uses Overdrive for ebooks. For the last couple of years no one could put library books on their Kobos. I just discovered today that we can again! I am so very excited. I’ve been reading on my phone, but I like the experience of the Kobo better.
I just downloaded “Relax, Dammit!: a user’s guide to the age of anxiety” by Timothy Caulfield. Interestingly, the US version of this book is called “Your Day, Your Way: the fact and fiction behind your daily decisions” which is much less fun, IMO.

I was really disappointed in Outlawed. Once I got used to the premise it fell flat and then ended abruptly.
Next up - Sigh, Gone

Finished my book club reads for January, so I’m restarting The Hobbit, which I plan on actually finishing this time, & picked up Evvie Drake Starts Over. I need to see which categories they fit into for a local library’s reading challenge I’m doing this year.

I thought Evvie Drake was really cute.
Just finished Ishiguro's "Never Let Me Go" which was weird and disturbing (as it was intended to be!).

I enjoyed Evvie Drake, especially her friendship with Andy. I tried listening to The Hobbit while on the treadmill, but I’m not feeling the narrator, so I switched to Macbeth: A Novel, narrated by Alan Cumming; who better to perform a version of the Scottish Play? I’m really enjoying it.

I'm reading a book about Jack the Ripper - I had no idea that there were only 5 victims and that he was only active about 10 weeks!

I'm reading a book about Jack the Ripper - I had no idea that there were only 5 victims and that he was only active about 10 weeks! If you’re interested in the era and the Ripper story, I read this a while back and found it really interesting: The Five: The Untold Lives of the Women Killed by Jack the Ripper, by Hallie Rubenhold

Wrapping up Elin Hilderbrand's Trouble in Paradise on audio. About 60% through A Prayer for Owen Meany.

This book really didn't mention a lot about the women other than the fact that they were prostitutes. Man! Women had a tough life back then. I just checked at the library site and signed it out.

I started Impersonation by Heidi Pitloch, about a ghost writer. It's okay so far.
I've got Chuck Wendig's The Wanderers on deck.

I've been reading a lot of fluff (Ilona Andrews's Hidden Legacy series) which has been great. But I've just picked up (again) Hilary Mantel's 3rd Thomas Cromwell book & am determined to finish it. She really brings you close to the characters & I don't want it to end. I'm re-listening to Calypso by David Sedaris on audio. He is just my favorite ever.

The Mystery of Mrs. Christie by Marie Benedict. I didn't realize it was based on a true story. I never really got into Christie's books, so I didn't know much about her.

I'm about halfway through Dead Mom Walking by Rachel Matlow.
It's a memoir about how the author's flamboyant mom decided to forgo modern medicine when she had colon cancer. Add to that is that the author at the time was a writer on Jian Gomeshi's show on CBC radio (horrible scandal in Canada), and it sounds like it was a pretty stressful time (understatement!). It's a really compelling story, written very well. I had a hard time putting it down to go to sleep last night.

It hits quite a few of my interests. I just finished The Five - which was excellent, BTW. I had no idea that most of the women Jack The Ripper killed WEREN'T prostitutes. Just very, very poor.

So I went on the library site, and of course, they had Dead Mom Walking. I couldn't find the wish list place any more so I had to download it. How am I going to explain this to the 4 other books I have checked out and not read yet???
