I have been reading Then She Was Gone by Lisa Jewell. It's pretty good. Am waiting on Firefly Lane to get here.

So I went on the library site, and of course, they had Dead Mom Walking. I couldn't find the wish list place any more so I had to download it. How am I going to explain this to the 4 other books I have checked out and not read yet??? Ha! I feel you.
Glad you liked The Five. I guess it was just easier to write the women off as prostitutes. And that still happens even now with violence - easier to dismiss if the victim is "lesser than".

I felt so bad for the women in "The Five." They really didn't stand a chance, and they lived so close to the edge that it only took one tiny insignificant thing (sometimes something not even their fault) to push them over and into abject poverty. The men had so much power back then, and did they ever abuse it.

Both my book groups are meeting next week, so I need to hurry & read the books for them. One is Greenglass House by Kate Milford, & the other is Shadow on the Mountain: A Yazidi Memoir of Terror, Resistance and Hope by Shaker Jeffrey & Katharine Holstein. Shaker Jeffrey served as a combat interpreter for the US military & became good friends with some of the servicemen, one of whom happens to be married to one of my friends in the book group (which is why we’re reading the book).

This is why I've never been able to join a book group. I just couldn't take the pressure! Especially if I wasn't fussy on the book.

I loved The Four Winds. It really portrayed the dust bowl well. It was amazing how people survived

I finished Dead Mom Walking - really enjoyed it. Of course it re-enforced my rage against charlatans who push "alternative" medicine (it's NOT medicine - it's something different!) Now back to my regular Kobo programming LOL.

Finished my book club reads for January, so I’m restarting The Hobbit, which I plan on actually finishing this time, & picked up Evvie Drake Starts Over. I need to see which categories they fit into for a local library’s reading challenge I’m doing this year. I've been listening to an excellent audiobook version of the Hobbit on YouTube. It's got a black background, white letters with yellow and red pictures. The narrator has all the voices down pat. If you wanted a different medium. Found a link...

Ooooh, it’s performed by Andy Serkis?!? Yeah, that’s gotta be waaaaaay better than the version I have! I finished listening to my “treadmill book” so I’ll have to start this one. Thanks!!

Everyone says Four Winds is sad, so I'm avoiding it for now. I feel the need to post anytime someone mentions The Midnight Library, I hated it so much! I finished it just so I could hate it with authority! Poorly written morality tale IMO. Most disagree with me Just wrapped up Super Sad True Love Story by Gary Shteyngart & listening to the 3rd book in Ali Smith's "seasons" quartet. Moving on to Elin Hilderbrand's third book of the "Paradise" trilogy next.

I just finished The Sanatorium. The setting and writing was good, didn’t care for the ending. I also read The Story of Mina Lee which I found sad and The Authenticity Project which I loved

If anyone is looking for some heartwarming fluff, I can recommend the St. Francis Society for Wayward Pets. I read it in one sitting. It's not exactly realistic in any way, but if you need something light that wraps up in a neat bow, I think you will like it. Definitely get it through the library - can't say I recommend it for $14.

A friend sent me information about where I could get a link to a beautiful annotated edition of The King in Yellow. Reading on screen in the meantime, waiting for lockdown to end so I can get it properly printed out and bound!
