I think more should be done but there is a lot of money to be made in the food industry....
Also there were a lot of obese people with rifles and confederate flags at the Michigan protests so I am sure they would be really outraged....

Exactly how does the government ban obesity?

It’s not a logical comparison, and going outside isn’t banned.

It could start if the medical community (DDS included) would stop shaming obese people and treating it like a disease rather than a moral failing.

I don’t think I’ve said anything but medical data in this thread. Facts may be upsetting but that isn’t shaming. If the government is concerned with saving the most number of lives then this is the logical starting place.

Exactly how does the government ban obesity? The government can fine those that do not comply with their regulations. For example, right now if you go surfing in California and break the governments social distancing ban you get fined $800? $1000? In order to discourage congregation on the beach, help prevent the spread of disease and save lives. In theory, the government could also fine those who are overweight in order to discourage obesity, help prevent disease and save lives.

Obesity is prevalent in those who are poor and sometimes due to lack of availability of healthy food. Maybe that should be solved first.

A fat tax might be a good motivator for me..... If the government is truly interested in saving lives and lowering healthcare costs then obesity is the disease to start with. Fining people is certainly not the place to start. That will do exactly nothing. There are all sorts of factors at play: 1. Sugar is addictive. It has been argued as addictive as some illegal drugs 2. Poorer people with single parent households, lower wage jobs, working multiple jobs, etc... often only have the time and energy to prepare convenience food or get fast food. 3. Eating healthy takes menu planning and meal preparation. People living in generational poverty likely do not have these skills. 4. Being poor is stressful. Eating high sugar, high fat foods is a self-medicating means of coping (also for people not so poor). I'm sure there are more I can't think of now. Reducing obesity requires all sorts of social programs we as a nation don't want to pay for.

And we made drugs illegal, and we often fine and/or jail people for using them as a deterrent to keep people from getting sick from drugs. Maybe we need to make sugar a controlled substance.🤷♀️

I live in a rural poor area. A large percentage of children are currently depending on picking their school breakfasts and lunches plus Pantry items to provide basic needed nutrition and care. There is a lack of any sort of affordable public transport and there are quite a few people who do not have regular access to any sort of storage or kitchen. We deliver to those who have no transport and provide foods a child can easily handle.
It's super easy to hand someone a bag of rice and beans a whole other thing for them to have the means to cook it.

Theres also a lot of obesity in non-poor populations. 🤷♀️ Poverty isn’t the sole contributing factor to obesity. Our president is pretty wealthy and also obese (whether he admits it or not).
